How To Become A Freight Broker in 6 Easy Steps
#1 First and foremost get enrolled in a freight broker training program so you can learn exactly what a freight broker does and how they do it. There are many ways to get trained including online training programs as well as class room settings.

#2 To get the licensing process started you must complete the OP-1 application through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The cost to register and acquire your motor carrier numbers is only $300. Please note the FMCSA refers to freight broker by their legal name which is property brokers, so don't get confused.
#3 Next you must get a $10,000 surety bond referred to as a BMC 85 or $10,000 broker trust which is referred to as a BMC 84.
#4 Submit proof of your BMC 84 or BMC 85 to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
#5 Next you need to secure process agents in each state you will be doing business in and file your BOC-3 form with the FMSCA. BOC-3 form is also known as the Designation of Process Agent Form.
#6 Now all that's left is to wait. Turnaround is typically about 4-5 weeks for you to be notified your license has been approved and is now active. Congratulations you can now legally broker freight under your own authority.
